At our nursery we are committed to reducing the use of one-use plastics.  For us this means no disposable nappies.  It's estimated that a baby will go through 6,000 to 7,000 nappies in the first 2 and a half years of its life and in the UK alone 3.6 billion used nappies will end up in landfill.  In addition cloth nappies  have a 25% lower carbon footprint than one-use nappies and this can improve to 40% if you dry them without the use of a tumble dryer as we do at nursery.

But what about the benefit to our babies' bottoms?  Reusable nappies are not as effective at trapping urine as disposables so when babies are wet, we know it, and we change them.

Leading disposable nappy manufacturers for example proudly claim that their nappies will keep your baby dry for up to 12 hours!!  Well here's a wake-up call - your baby isn't dry - his clothes and his sheets may be dry, but baby's most sensitive parts are marinating in a stew of urine, plastic and chemicals.  For 12 hours! Ouch!
